Using the Mac OS X Menubar
Finally, after quite some debugging (of the very same bug for months), I committed preliminary support for the global Mac OS X menubar to GIMP trunk.
It’s the result of a project I’ve been involved with at Imendio. Check the project page.
For seeing the coolness without compiling yourself, check the video.

Is this available to download somewhere? Gimp menus make me crazy!

There are no binary releases yet, but GIMP 2.4.0-RC2 has just been released and can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.4/testing

Please forgive me if I’m missing something obvious, but do you need a special GTK or anything like that for this to work? I just pulled down the Gimp 2.4rc2 sources and compiled with the same libraries that worked ok with rc1, and for me, the menus are just plain gone.
Looks like it could be really nice, though. 🙂

You need to have your GTK+ built with the quartz backend, you can’t just use the GTK+ installed by fink or macports. There is no X server involved here, just the plain cocoa and carbon APIs.

You download either a X11 version, or one without x11

Looking good; it would seem that a global menu bar and the GIMP are well matched.

[…] The observant follower of All Things Imendio (TM) would also realize that part of this project was to create hooks for GTK+ to integrate with the Mac OS X menubar which Mitch blogged about. […]
